If you need an impression for just one tooth in the front...say for maybe a crown...then they can usually use a tray that will only go from about canine to canine tooth. Make sure that you tell your dentist that you would prefer that if it is available.

I am a dental nurse so may be able to help. There are ways to take impressions of front teeth without full mouth, your dentist can get partial impression trays that just cover the front six teeth in your mouth. The problem with this is though if your front teeth touch top and bottom a dentist will need top and bottom full impressions to get the bite of your teeth right for your crown, denture or bridge. If he doesn't do this you could end up with severe pain in teeth and/or gums, sometimes the work done just wont fit. So I would probably advise that if your tooth do touch (this being called occlusion) it is worth suffering the impressions as this will prevent any further problems. They do have fast setting impression materials that will shorten the time you will need them in your mouth, if they are using alginate (just ask) they can use warm water to help it set quicker. Good luck.

I had a front tooth missing and didn't fancy my mouth being filled just as you describe, By working in front of a mirror I fashioned a tooth out of some white wood, just a little tight so it jammed into position and stayed there. The trouble started when it got wet with saliver... it started to swell forcing my jaw to spread... go to the dentist and only suffer for five minutes.

There are ways but if you need a full mouth impression then just let the dr or the assistant know that you don't like it soo much and if the assistant knows what they are doing they can fill an impression tray with out any material going down your throat if that's what really gets you

Nope.
He could work around it, but in reality, it's better to have a full impression to see how the other teeth will react to whatever you're getting.
