Welcome to Toronto !

I would recommend "Novotel - Toronto Centre".
Its a nice clean modern reasonably-priced hotel (classical style architecture), in a relatively quiet spot. Its short walk, 1 or 1 1/2 blocks from Union Station (THE train station), and similarly a short walk to a clean modern grocery store (Dominion) and a historic St.Lawrence Market. There are restaurants of all kinds all around, and pubs too, as well as theatres. (American, Swiss, Greek, Italian, Chinese, Canadian, Australian, etc). Its very close to the Hockey Hall of Fame, and a famous view of special Toronto buildings, the antique, triangular "Flatiron" building and tall bank towers and CN tower in the background. Its still within walking distance to Metro Toronto Convention Centre, CN Tower, Roy Thomson Hall, AirCanada Centre (Hockey/Basketball arena) the harbour ferry boats to Toronto Islands where you can get a great view of the city skyline, and enjoy a nice walk in a big park.

You could get on the subway from Union Station and get around very efficiently, if you want to visit Eaton Centre Shopping mall (you could even walk there) or museum or the Art Gallery or Queens Park (the "Capitol Hill" of our Province), and the upscale uptown "Yorkville" area.

You can see a view and ratings and price of the hotel at expedia.ca

click on Hotels, enter Toronto in the dialogue box, and its on the first page.

If you're planning a big trip and price isn't an issue, then yeah take the Royal York. If you're looking for one that's like RIGHT next to Union, take the Strathcona. That was a nice hotel that I stayed in with about 4 people in a small room during a convention. The price is right, but the rooms are fairly snug. All depends on what sort of price you want to spend. If it's just you and you need a place to crash by the train station, take the Strathcona. If you want to have a ritzy hotel with big beds and crazyness, take the Royal York.

The Royal York Hotel is directly across from the train station. It is one of the top hotels in the city, if you like older hotels. If price is an issue, I recommend you check TripAdvisor.com for something else. The RY won't be cheap.
