If youre visiting manhatten, which is the coolest city in the world! The cheapest hotel ive found is the penyslvania hotel. Its not the greatest its very basic but the location is fab. Its near the empire state building and madison square garden.

define central. we stayed at the Cosmopolitan Hotel in Tribeca
corner of west broadway and chamber street.
It was clean, cheap , there was a really nice pub owned by a liverpool fan around the corner,
we walked everywhere from it (we were bonkers at the time) but there was a subway station nearby and plenty of taxis. we were also within walking distance of battery park and china town, it was cool.
also
easier to sleep in cos less noise than in times square

Go to hotels.com. The ones on the Upper West Side in the 80-100 dollar range I have found to be acceptable. That's where I stayed when I went to NYC to visit when I was a grad student.
Or stay at a fleabag and bring a bunch of sheets to drape over everything.
