When offered a treat for good behavior (sit for example), my sheltie pup will sit back and put both front paws into my hand and then sniff to find the treat. Is this a sheltie thing? I'm trying to decide if he's just got a weird quirk, or if he's having trouble seeing or smelling food.

Watch him he may be trying to 'dig' the treat out of your hand, so your garden may get a doggie makeover. Or it could just be a weird quirk. When i tell my springer spaniel to sit she sits with her back to you and looks at you over her shoulder and no amount of training has changed that.

I knew a blue heeler who did this too. It's a quirk thing, and their way of making sure you don't take off with the treat.

He is just being cute. Different dogs develop different quirks on their own. I don't think there is anything wrong with his ability to see or smell.

My JRT mix and my Lab mix are both very "pawsy" type dogs. So my answer is yes.
