you haven't stated why they make fun of her or what they are saying - is it specifically about her preppy clothes or her colour or both or none of the above?

sometimes when people stare someone down it is because they are intimidated by them - maybe cause she is pretty or because she dresses nice - or if she is comfortable with who she is that will intimidate those kind of people the most -cause they can never just be...

Are you in a primarily white city or town? Are you sure it's because she's black??

I suggest you stand up for her and kick some serious butt!

Racism is not tolerated by me and I am not black. I have seriously started a trend with racism, I do not allow people to talk trash about any minorities in my prescence and do a bit of "preaching" about it and ya know what? A few of my friends do the exact same thing now (and these are people that used to crack racist jokes themselves)

They are probably jealous and ignorant. Making 'fun' of people stems with those characters whom are insecure in there own existence...Or they are intimidated, either way it's cool that you do not fall into there ignorant happy trap and step to your own pace. I think if people could keep there safe, youthful views on world and race without letting media or people influence them this world would be a much happier place. But that won't happen...
*sigh*

They are rude, unkind and jealous. Does it bother her? It shouldn't tell her to rise above the occasion, keep her head high, and act like they don't exist. I am white and have 2 daughters who wouldn't think of being obnoxious to another human. Good for you, keep up the friendship.

one of the many faces of racism.
the really amazing thing to me-- white woman that i am-- is how my women-of-color friends can deal EVERYDAY with some form of slur or racism or discount and be optimistic, calm, dignified, open, friendly, hopeful, happy, relaxed or pleasant. Way more classy than anything the white ones can pull off.

What babe said about "just kids being kids" is very unfair and not accurate. There is no excuse for unprompted rude behavior.

They are jealous. It happens nothing you can do about but hope that they grow up one day soon.
