Quote from: Mark Twain
"You believe in a book that has talking animals, wizards, witches, demons, sticks turning into snakes, burning bushes, food falling from the sky, people walking on water, and all sorts of magical, absurd and primitive stories, and you say we are the ones that need help?"

I'm not an atheist, but I think I can answer.
Like other people have said, they don't see any evidence for God, or any supernatural powerful being for that matter. They believe that the world and universe as we know it could have come about without being created--or at least helped along--by a powerful deity.
I can see both sides of this point. On one end, I can understand that the universe is pretty complex--but I would by lying if I said I have never looked up at the sky and wondered if there really was anyone looking back down on me.
I guess you just have to use your own logic and believe whatever makes the most sense to you.

First of all, it is spelled A T H E I S T....I don't usually correct spelling or grammatical errors but it irritates me a great deal when atheist is misspelled.
Second, this question has been asked at least a hundred times. I don't believe because I am smarter than you.
If you're going to ask stupid questions, then I am going to give you a stupid answer.
Read The God Delusion by Richard Dawkins. You might learn something.
Oh yeah...when I die, I will be cremated...ashes scattered at the "window" in Big Bend National Park. There is no afterlife.

So Dakota, by your question you seem to suggest that the reason to believe in God is because you are scared of what will happen to you after death. Sorry, but fear doesn't make an intelligent person believe in a thing that he or she has no other reason to believe in.
How did we 'get into it'? We examined our world, considered the way things are, and realized that there is no god or gods. How did YOU 'get into' not believing in Santa Claus? You realized it.

I think we just cease to exsist. just flip a switch from animated to inert. dead.
some days i think we may just join up with a batch of pre -incarnate souls, if anything i am a fan of the reincarnation idea.
but as an individual i don't have to worry about hard rules about what will happen, I honestly don't know. but I know if the world is about 1 chance to live - i want to live it well and be happy with myself.
how i got into it - seen the corruption of the church, seen the cruel the "faithful" are. and how much hate your leaders spread - gays are sinners, muslims, are sinners, anyone who isn't just like me is evil . that is just divisive. thats what drove me away... oh and the whole of the bible being nothing but an edited manufactured document for control of the masses.

It's quite simple.
There's no evidence for a deity.
There's no apparent need to posit the existence of one.
Finally, it's questionable that a deity can be verified in any way. With this in mind, the concept is useless to discuss or consider.
As for the possibility of afterlife and supernature, I generally am a Materialist. I reject supernature and afterlife, thus when one dies one ceases to exist.

It's very difficult to explain why we simply find no reason to believe in god. But it is probably fairly easy for you to work through yourself (don't mean to sound like I'm putting you down there).
Consider -
Why don't you believe in Allah ?
Why don't you believe in Krishha ?
If you are Catholic then why aren't you Baptist ?
If you are Christian then why aren't you Mormon ?
Does that make sense? You picked one set of beliefs because it made a great deal of sense to you. But in doing that you have rejected hundreds and thousands of other beliefs that lots of other people think are the TRUTH.
How does that seem ?

No evidence for god. Everything theists have ever explained using god has turned out to have a better explanation that is non-god.
When we die our consciousness flicks off like a bulb going out, and that's the end of that. No big deal. Nothing to be scared of.
Sorry you don't get it but thanks for trying. Your answers have been pretty disrepectful this pm, and this is a start towards being a bit more Christ like. Well done.

God is not necessary to explain any of my personal observations. Science and rational thought works fine for me...there is no reason to invoke the supernatural.
When I die, my body will turn to dust but my ideas will live on.

I deny God my service because he doesn't believe in me. Why should I follow a being that gets off on forcing inferior being's to love and praise Him. You are his b*tch, and he uses you to better himself. I don't care how almighty he is, he will never get my respect.
