I agree, the Internet may not always have the best answers for everything and I think this is one of them.

As you've pointed out here, many volunteer opportunities are "events" rather than something that is constantly ongoing. Last Thanksgiving I delivered food to low income households for Care & Share, but delivering food isn't something this organization does on a regular basis.

A good place to start your search is your local telephone book. Look for words and phrases like "volunteer", "community", "The American Red Cross", "Community Service" (don't get this one mixed up with court-orderd service) and things like that. Believe it or not, many government agenices like Police, Sheriff, and District Attorney's are always looking for volunteers to help them out.

I would recommend that you work through your local volunteer center. Most of them have websites that contain a database of local community volunteer projects that you can filter by your interests.

I work through my local volunteer center, which is affiliated with a group called the Hands On Network and the Points of Light Foundation:

The volunteer centers listed in these groups are there to connect you with meaningful volunteer opportunities that meet real community needs and match your interests.

If no volunteer center exists in your area, I would also recommend your local chapter of the United Way. They also specialize in connecting volunteers with community needs.

Good luck!
