LOL-dogs do not think in languages. They communicate in canine signals,ie-sniffing,barking, and posturing. Dogs are trained to respond to humans by familiar sounds of our language.

This is a very good question, firstly it has been proven that dogs think in the language they were first initiated into, so if like many of our dogs they are born in other parts of the world they will think in that language and also weird as it may seem they will have a regional accent, to test this we learn languages from the places of our dogs birth, when we first meet them we speak in their language and they do understand, then we introduce English to them over a slow period but always try to keep the accent they are used too, so they can understand, and it does work, the dogs come round far quicker than when we didnt do this. Afterwards tha dogs will develop a bark from the region they are living in so there is such a thing as a scouse dog, a cockney, dog and a french dog...we do hope this helps.

Ok. Here is an interesting question. The answer, so far, are also, though a bit sarcastic. :) :) If you are referring to two dogs from separate countries getting together, than I would say, they would understand each other just fine. God mixed up human language at the tower of Babel, NOT dog language. But, if you are referring to a dog being able to understand a human from a different country, than yes, it would have problems undersatnding the human. Dogs learn the language they are brought up in. If you speak english, your dog will learn english commands. If you say Stay! In english and he knows that word, he will obey. if you say it in french he may not understand you (unless you do hand signals as well. Dogs are far more responsive to body language.) Also, recent studies show that dogs can understand up to 200 words, which ranks their intellegence right near dolphins and chimps, so yes, dogs can understand quite a bit more than we are giving them credit for.

No dog has the mental capacity to understand or communicate in a spoken language. Dogs do however, understand body language and they know different ways to communicate fear, play, alertness, defense and the like, through their body movements.

It is my belief that they go by recognizing sounds, have you ever noticed they know the sound of your car motor or the door shutting. I live in the City and mine hear cars and doors slamming all day but only go crazy when they hear our cars pull up. As far as the language I think its the same like the word food either its the fffff sound or ooood sound they recognize the different sounds. Do they communicate with each other, I suppose but what does the smelling each others butt mean!!!

I think that since the dog can respond to you saying "sit" or "out" or "food" then they probly think partially in English. There was a guy on TV who has a dog that can do math. He taught it 1+4 and it would bark 5 barks. He taught it hard ones like 5+4-2. It would respond barking 7 barks. That is my guess ... that dogs think in English . It just comes out in dog ! lol.

I think that dogs think in the language they were raised in. So if a dog was raised in the US and the people it was around always spoke English then it would think in English. If a dog was raised in Puerto Rico and raised around people that always spoke Spanish it would think in Spanish. I think puppies are like human babies they learn to understand language as they grow.

Dogs, much like babies and young children, think in pictures. When you say their name to them, they think it is more like a command meaning, "Come!" They respond to word commands because they are conditioned to do so, through petting, food rewards, or whatever other positive reinforcement they are offered for such behavior.
Dogs communicate through body language and dominant and submissive gestures, such as lying on their backs to say, "You are the alpha male!" or several other displays to establish leadership and submission to their master.

I know a lot about animals.

dogs don't think in a language at all. they use the tone of your voice to work out Wat u want. like if u were cross with them and used a deep angry tone they would know that u are angry, but if u used a happy tone they would know they have done something right. they over time become familiarized with words after a period of time, dogs are so smart that they can put together the sounds that you make to work out Wat u want like there name for example they no after a period of time wat there sounds are they dont have names they have sounds. thats how sit, roll, quiet and stay are obeyed by the dog they recignise the sound u make with the action u give them whilst they r learning. but i like to think that all animals have there special language that we will never understand
