Most of my life I've been more prone to colds than people around me. And mine last longer.

Often differences in susceptibility to colds and flus is thought to indicate variations in immune system functionality. The immune system is complex, a system of intelligence and many components. There is not room here to describe it in detail.

Possible causes for this that we can address are non-genetic, and many.

The first layer includes optimizing diet and exercise, and making sure your environment is as free of toxins as possible (for instance, if you live in a very smoggy scenario, you might want to consider an ionizer.)

People often say the first line of defense of the immune system is the flora and fauna of the digestive system. So a good probiotic, like Custom or Culturelle can't hurt. Or you can eat live yogurt or keifer. I do the former.

Some people say heavy metals can compromise the immune system. You can remove these from your body in various ways. I take Chlorella, for one thing. There are other products, like Zeolite. You can research this. Some people have silver fillings replaced.

Another area worth exploration is the class of herbs called "adaptogens." These are substances thought to modulate the immune system, strengthening it as needed, decreasing it where too strong...almost like they are conveying operating code. These include (but aren't limited to) ginsing, jaogulin, samento, some kinds of mediciial mushrooms, rhodiola, etc.

There is also the possibility of "stealth viruses," things that can evade easy detection, but some people believe to be the basis for some chronic problems. The adaptogens might help to address this, if it was true.

Optimizing diet and supplementing if necessary is a process of study and experimentation...and if it fits, you can be tested for some things, like mineral levels.
