chewing the skirting board in their designated sleeping area, and a low lying melamine shelf despite having squeaky toys, rope pulls, and long lasting dog chews, could it be that they are just naughty as puppies or teething, I leave enough stuff for them to play with when I go to bed, and I get up early enough! I can't be there 24-7 can I.

Dogs are done teething @ 6mos of age--that's when all of their adult teeth are present. Having puppies is just like having small children...child/puppyproofing your home will help! You should crate train them so when you're away they can be confined and contrary to what people think, it's not cruel. Being that they are older it will take them longer to adjust but they will be just fine.

Your dogs may not be done teething. Puppies are usually teething from 6-8 months. Patience and consistency is key. Keep telling them "no" when they are chewing things they aren't supposed to. Keep praising them when they chew things they are. Try spraying things they aren't supposed to with Bitter Apple, which might help. You can buy this spray in any pet store. My sister also used red pepper flakes. When her puppy tried to chew something she wasn't supposed to, she got a couple red pepper flakes in her mouth instead. She quickly learned not to chew that thing!

Now, this is fine, training does involve teaching dogs specific behaviors with a step-by-step approach. This week, though, I’m going to discuss three mental habits that will not only enable you train more effectively but also make life pleasant for both you and your dog.
