I used to sell furniture and i can answer this question. When people say they "stick to their leather" or that is it "hot" in the summer that is fake leather. Real leather is always room temperature until you sit on it and then it will change to your body temperature, fake leather cant breathe at all, so once it is at body temp it get sticky because it cant get rid of the heat. So if you are looking at a leather piece and want to know whether or not it is leather, look for seams. If it has just as many seams on the front as back then it is real, if it has a plain back or sides it is fake.

Leather is the skin of an animal. faux, which means "false" in French, is a man made texture used instead of leather. Real leather has a distinctive smell, from the processing I suppose. Most people find it pleasant. Leather is much more expensive than than man made imitations, usually altlhough there are many grades( QUALITIES) of leather. Finer, soft leather is usually more expensive than a one that is less soft.

Unless you encounter a leather expert, nobody will be able to tell whether it is real leather or fake. Real Leather is highly pricey and it will last you a very long time, so yes it is a good investment...Faux leather will not last as long and you will notice that it will start to "shed" and fall apart from constant wear...but it'll last a few years or so.

leather - cow skin
faux leather - man made (often pvc)
Some faux leather jackets are very convincing these days and much easier to clean than the real thing - you wipe them down rather than dry clean them

Look at the thickness of the leather. Real leather is thicker than faux leather, more stiffer, and has a unusual odor to it, more like a cleaning process. Faux leather will be either of a dull shine to a high gloss. that is what most shoes, purses, dining chairs, office chairs, etc are made of. Car seats are the real deal and so are moccasins.
