It was running poorly making wierd sound and lost power when given gas. Eventually it died and will now hardly idle. it is definately a fuel problem but is that a problem with the pump or the filter. It is a 92 jeep wrangler

Very characteristic of a bad fuel pump. Also, when changing out a pump that has failed, its important to change the filter as well. Most pumps come with a new pickup screen, be sure to use it as well.

ya the pump is most likely bad so you should change that out and while your there you might as well change the fuel filter.
