My brother is a 2 time world champion fiddle player. He took lessons under one of Bob Will's former fiddle players and went to bluegrass festivals every weekend. He also practiced 4 to 5 hours a day which about drove me crazy when we were kids. find someone to give you lessons and hit the bluegrass festivals because there are usually very nice folks there that are happy to show you ways to improve.

You really need a teacher, there is no substitue as far as violin is concerned i'm afraid. I suggest doing a few technique exercies but starting with a book which is fun at the same time. Go straight in with the bow instead of plucking first, but really work hard on perfecting an excellent bow hold right from the start.
