Edible Cake Toppers For Kids

COOKIES!!! MMMM my fave. If the cake or entire party has a theme go with that...animal crackers. Any bite size cookie would be a great edible cake topper. Also, party stores have tons of that stuff with different popular kiddie characters. If you have time and want cheap you can also look into making your own. I'm sure you can get free directions somewhere online and the materials are probably much cheaper than buying the already made decoration.

You can get pictures made to put on top of the icing on cakes. They can make an edible copy of a photograph. I've seen people use baby portraits and things like that. You can't use anything that is copyrighted unless the store has permission to do so. You can check at the local deli or bakery for that type of thing.

I baked a cake for Christmas it was totally WILLY WONKA. It wasn't too expensive, but found bargains on icing and the mini-M&Ms.

I made a rich Chocholate Cake-2 round pans
I used Chocholate Icing for the middle layer, sprinkled with White Chocholate Chips
Then I used Whipped White Icing to cover the whole Cake
Then I used Strawlike Cookies (Peroettes) around the whole Cake, they were Chocholate filled. (Vertical), like a fence.
Then used leftover broken straw cookies in the center, it looked like logs stacked up for a fire.
Then I sprinkled Red-colored sugar on Top/ Blue would be neat too.
Then I sprinkled mini-M&M's generously. I do mean a lot.
Then sprinkled more White Chocholate chips on top.
Lastly, I tied a Ribbon around the whole circumfrence of the Cake.
The ribbon was the type you can curl.

This was absolutely so much fun to make, and the children went wild over it. Somebody took a picture of it. I haven't seen it yet.

I got all of the items on sale. The tubeular cookies were $1 a can at Walgreens I used 3 cans. I put them on the cake last because after about 4-5 hrs, they get too moist from the icing.

As a Culinary Chef mastering in the Baking and Pastries, this one can be answered several ways.

There's a few things we do in the bakery that we use as edible cake toppers.

1) Sugar - This takes a little time and some skill to accurately do. But with some time (and patience) they will turn out good. Look through the internet for "poured sugar" or "Sugar Art" (the art of cooked sugar). But be warned, it can be dangerous, but TONS of fun; and it looks really good.

2) Chocolate - One of the easiest (but at rare times most difficult) to work with and always a delicacy among all kids. For the best chocolate to use, make sure you buy "modeling chocolate" or as some call it "moulding chocolate."

3) Frosting - There's tons among tons of recipes for frostings. But a great one to use would be "Royal Icing." Upon sitting it holds itself together great.

4) Misc. things - You can make a variety of different cake toppers using things you may find in the pantry at home. Use marshmellows dipped in chocolate and decorated with edible paint. Rice-Crispy Treats are another great alternative. Just be creative!

Sometimes, the best things are done right at home. Instead of spending money on something you can do at home can be more fun (and less strenious).

Just be creative and you can produce one of the best looking cakes your kids have ever seen!!!

Good-luck!!

Ask the baker at your local grocery store and they will give you a selection so you can pick from some of your favorites. There are also some cakes at Dairy Queen that already have edible cake toppers. Some Dairy Queens also give you several options for edible cake toppers.

Instead of a website to offer you, here's an idea I used with one of my sons' birthday cakes.

It was when Thomas the Tank Engine was super popular. I found a coloring book with Thomas' picture on the front, bought two and cut out the pictures and kinda made a 3D Thomas for the top.
But what made my son really happy was all the licorice I put on the top. I'd taken pull-apart red licorice and made a braided rope around the rim. Black licorice were the train rails. Licorice all-sorts were scattered all over the frosting. I even had blue licorice "smoke" stuck to the cardboard Thomas' smokestack. I've seen clear crystal rock sugar used as smoke too.

If you want to use a premade picture for your cake do a search for edible image or edible photo.

If you would like a premade piped decoration try your local craft store or Wilton.com.

Another option is to use a stencil and food color spray that you can purchase also from Wilton.

You could buy premade fondant in colors and cut shapes from cookie cutters to place on your cake. Edible markers are also available to draw on the cut out shapes.

If you would like to try to make your own here is a product and directions on how to create your own picture by tracing with an icing thay hardens.

Check any of the baking supply websites. They have fun and edible cake toppers for any kind of cake. If you live in NYC there is a great store on 22nd between Broadway and 6th Avenue.

Good luck!

A quality cake decorating set will include icing tips that allow you to create all kinds of icing cake toppers.
For what you want to do, that sounds like that would be a beneficial purchase.
