She has to do something about it. It may not be as bad as she thinks. She just needs to tell the truth. They can sense when someone is trying to get by with something.
Maybe she could get an extention. The longer she waits to do something, the worse it may be for her. Good luck to her.

Generally if your visa expires, you can still LEAVE the country, you just can't get back in again. If your friend is EXTREMELY late on her visa (like 6 months or more) she might find herself at the business end of a fine, but generally they'll just let you leave the country. Not properly extending your visa though can hurt your friend the next time she tries to get a visa in the U.K.

I don't know the laws in the UK, but most countries slap a fine on the person who has over-stayed their visa, and/or deport them.
Immigration doesn't take excuses or reasons.

Legally, you cannot change the laws to suit individuals. She was not taken ill and as you stated it was one of a few friends that was taken ill which meant that there were others to look in on that friend. She just used that as an excuse to overstay her welcome and she might be deported and not allowed to ever return if she is caught.

well, anyone who has overstayed their visa and been apprehended would be sent back to their home country anyway, so I assume she would be allowed to return home, but not without reprimand--staying for a friend is probably insufficient reason.

Tell her to go to the UK embassy. They usually know what paperwork she needs to fill out. They will help here to go back home
