I am interested in buying a DVD recorder to replace my VCR. A few questions...
#1. If I have digital cable (with a receiver), will I only be able to watch the program I am recording?
#2. What types of DVDs will it play?
#3. Would it make sense to use the recorder as my primary DVD player?
#4. What are good models and their price range?

#1 On some dvr you can watch other channel while recording on another.
#2 Check the player spec, but most will be able to play dvd-r/+r, dvd-rw/+rw, dvd, cd- r/w, vcd,scvd,jpg,....Some can also play dvd-ram.
#3 No. You don't want to wear out the drive and dvr picture quality is usually worse than stand alone player.
#4 There are many models to choose from and the price range varies. The lower price dvrs won't have a built-in hard drive. Some good brandname recorders are Pioneer, JVC, Toshiba, Panasonic or LiteOn.

yeah a dvd recorder is right for you. It ill play any kind of DVDs. you can watch other shows than what youre recording on most models, and multi-show recoding at the same time is possible on some. getting one with a hard drive is a great idea too.

#1. you can only watch the station you are viewing just like a vcr.
#2. Usually any format depending on model
#3. You can I dont see why not and the one I'm recommend is worth it
#4. As I say its worth it. Panasonic is very reliable and this one does contain hdmi so you can upconvert your dvd's to your hdtv if you have one if not then it still uses regular connections. I say for this price its a hell of a deal.
