Is it polite to tell someone to get a life? or should the said person get one? ummmmmmmm I read this on another question and felt a motherlyness come over me that made me want to show the 'Get a life person' That it's just not good etiquette.

How a person lives is entirely up to the individual, hence advising someone to "get a life" is extremely rude. What 'life' is to one person may be anathema to his or her interlocutor.

Etiquette, unfortunately, is a vanishing concept. It has been replaced by 'lifestyle', which covers a multitude of vicissitudes. Alas, poor humanity.

I think sometimes it's probably good advice and lets face it anybody asking questions on this site must be aware that they may get rude or unhelpful or stupid answers. If you only want polite answers ask only ask polite people the question. They can always ignore any answer they find unhelpful.

That depends upon the situation. In a formal situation, yes it is rude. However; in an on-line community the rules of social etiquette change. In an on-line community there are no rules against such mild insults. In essence that would be unacceptable in a formal situation however is acceptable on an on-line discussion such as those on Yahoo Answers.

Would you like to be told to get a life? I wouldn't, so I consider it to be rude.
