Macmillan nurses specialise in cancer and palliative care

2007-01-10 09:10:55 · answer #1 · answered by TRINA 2 · 0 0

They're nurses provided free of charge by the McMillian charity.

They really are angels.

In then end stages of terminal cancer they're there to support the patient and the family. They're entirely non-judgemental and give help day and night ranging from traditional nursing duties, to hand holding and listening.

They really are wonderful, wonderful people who work so hard to help the patient and the family have some quaility of life in the really dark times.

The only down side is that when you're offered a McMillan nurse, you know the end is in sight.

MacMillan are a palliative care charity most well known for their work with cancer. They provide both doctors and nurses, although nurses are the more well known.

As other people have said, they are wonderful, and help not just the patient the family around them, with care and practical information. I feel i must just add that one of the reasons not all people see them is this image that it means you have just weeks or less to live, this is the case with patients diagnosed with just that time left, but they can also work with cancer patients who have much longer left to live, so don't assume it means you have a very short time left.

they deal with cancer patients at home who are dying, they give a little respite to the family so they can sleep while they sit up with the patient. I was with one when my nephew died from cancer and she was so nice. they do a marvelous job.
