I am a 20 year old married muslim girl and recently moved to USA....I dont have any older female relatives like sister, mom , aunts etc to discuss this topic with.. and im the first among my friends to get married..
i am going to ahve a baby soon but im very scared and confused about how i will start potty training my child in USA america , especially if its a boy..( even girl)..
Muslim parents will understand my concern since us muslims use the toilet in a different way , and we also need WATER for cleaning in the toilet..
(As an adult , in the beginning i was shocked to see no " muslim toilets showers" in the toilet for adults .. but i installed a long shower hose attachment from another water line and also kept a " lota " )
Anyway, how do i handle potty /toilet training for my kids? especially keeping in mind they will be going to american non muslim schools (no toilet use water

is it ok for muslim kids in america not to use water? just toilet paper.?.. and do muslim toddler boys pee etc standing up or sitting ? ( muslim boys do it sitting)
someone please advise me.. only serious answers please..
i am a little embarrased to be asking these questions , but i have no female elder to ask this... getting married and coming to america has left me confused in many ways and im happy that at least i can get some kind people to help me here on yahoo answers.

Most muslims in usa first and second generations have adapted to living in usa excellently, while maintaining their personal religous identities.
Islam tells muslims to maintain the highest standard of personal hygeine including toilet habits, in which case making sure your armpits and groin are hair free and clean, and wiping away any residual fecal matter or urine after using the toilet.
That is why muslims are supposed to clean themselves from head to toe ( a 5 minute ritual called WUZU) 5 times a day before offering prayers.. This ensures that a muslim is in a state of cleanliness all over throughout the day and night. This wuzu is preferably performed with water.. but in case water is NOT available at any of these 5 times , WATER CAN BE REPLACED WITH CLEAN SAND .
Ofcourse regular daily bathing with water is definitely a must too.
As far as toilet habits are concerned , muslims as well as non muslim people in water deprived countries use clean smooth stones or blank paper( without Allah`s name on it or any kind of religious writing)
to clean their private parts after using the toilet.
If water is freely available , water is used to ensure private parts are properly cleaned and washing HANDS AFTER IS A MUST!
OK, as far as potty training your kids in usa goes.. most muslims ( all generations have taught their kids to follow the principles of muslims regarding rules of cleanliness , but also to adapt to the american ( non -muslim) way..
What this means is.... little muslim boys and girls are potty trained the regular way as other kids, using toilet paper , but told to also use a wet wipe ( flushable etc) after using toilet paper...after BOTH urination or defecation..
Some muslim familes also use a water vessel or muslim toilet shower for home use for themselves and kids...
but muslim kids in america etc are taught that they have to adapt at school.. so at school and public bathrooms , they too use toilet paper and keep wet disposable wipes with them.. if wipes are not available they can wet a big wad of toilet paper and use that too.
if muslim kids are unable to do even that, then parents make sure that they take several baths all day to ensure that the kids are clean..
Muslims in america etc teach boys to pee standing up .. to make sure they are not ridiculed in school.. and also to make sure they dont have problems using school bathrooms, toilets or public restroom as they grow up..
But of course, washing hands after using the toilet IS A MUST! COMPULSORY!.. and when they reach home they should take a thorough bath.
Islam guides muslims to maintain cleanliness based on what science and common sense teaches us too.
Thats why muslims clean themselves frequently each day and after using the restroom..
Because dont we all know that our hands must be completely clean before eating , so that no germs pass from our hands into our mouths and food !?
and dont we all agree we should be clean everyday to wash and remove all germs from the envoirnment sticking to our bodies ? So that we dont contract any illness?
logical and simple and easy!

Even though you are in America I am sure you have a Mosque or an Islamic communcty you are involved with. Is there a woman in yur Mosque who has children that you could confide in? If not, maybe there are websites for muslims to chat and stuff. Could you ask someone there? I would think that you could train your child in the american way, we teach our sons to pee standing up, and then when they get older, maybe show them the Muslim way. Since it doesn't seem to be a lot of Muslims giving you answers I suggest you ask a muslim woman in you know. That is probably the best way.

I am from my family like you ,but I am in the middle of nowhere her in the sahara desert in libya,i know it is very confusing ,but i think that using water in toilets is not obligatory in islam,i f there is no water, you can use paper or stone fpr 3 or 4 times to be clean, check this up,so teach them how to use water at home and plenty of toilet paper at scholl, tahara is not a great issue for little children since they are not praying,
about the potty ,i think you have to start really early ,as soon as they can sit,and you have to be raelly patient and persistent, sit them after meals ,because that is more likely when they will poop,
start the ttoilet at 2 years or when you think they are ready, and use one of those kids seat to be put on the toilet.

I'm not muslim but I say by all means continue your customs at home but also teach him to pee standing up and to use toilet paper when he goes to school so that he fits in and is not ridiculed. At home you can always have a bidet (not sure of spelling) installed so that your can do the water custom. A bidet looks like an open toilet but operated kind of like a water fountain to cleanse yourself.

Well I think you should do what feel right for you...your instincts will kick in and you will know what to do. They do have wipes for adult use as well as for children that are flushable if you are concerned with not being clean after using the restroom. They even have some that are individually packaged for in your purse or diaper bag. You can find them where the toilet paper is located at in your local supermarket.

I have no clue about your customs. But, since you are living in American maybe you should toilet train as we do. Little boys pee standing and everyone uses toilet paper when they have a bowel movement.

They do sell wet wipes that are flushable as well.
