This is what I've been told (I've got scriptures at home to back it up but since I don't have it here then you'll have to do your own research)
The term "sons of god" is only used in Job in the OT and is talking about angels. So, the "sons of god" were the fallen angels. They mixed with women and produced offspring that were part angel and part human. Now, scripture talks about a pit for the fallen angels and Christ will one day empty them from that pit into Gehenna often called the lake of fire (lowest level in hell). Anyways, it's believed that God destroyed all mankind with the flood thus killing these women and their offspring. The angels that participated in this sin were thrown into the pit. (Jude 1:6) There is a scripture in the NT where the demons of a possessed man were asking Jesus if He came to torment them before their time and throw them into the pit...so all the other angels saw the perverted "sons of god" thrown in the pit and know they will one day be there too.
As far as the whole spirit body thing...Check out Gen 19. The angels were in human form.

Interesting question. Sorry, if you are receiving obscene remarks. Not from me though. The word 'nephilim' is from the Hebrew, meaning= giant. As per Genesis 6. Here is something from a booklet entitled Giants of the Darkness, Howard B. Rand pgs 5,6. "Reconstructing the situation, we find that the sons of God, the fallen angels (2 Peter 2:4-5), were the giants, intellectually as well as physically, who became lords over mankind. Finally, these son of God, seeing the beauty of the daughters of men, began to cohabit with them with the result that their offspring inherited the immortal spirits of their father and their giant stature, while their physcial bodies were but flesh and blood, inherited from their mothers."
A quote from Wilson's Old Testament word studies, pg 185, Giant." In a broader sense, it appears to have included all the giant tribes of Canaan, Deut. 2:11,20. In subsequent times, the sons of Rapah appear to have been men of extraordinary strength among the Philistines." Goliath was one of these.
How all this came about, has not be revealed. The book of Job speaks about it. But, those spoken of there are another thing.
Recall that in 2 Peter 2:4 it states; "For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment..." This place is called Tartarus. A place below hell, where no light shines. Only these beings are there, and as Scripture says they are in "...chains of darkness..."
I shudder to think what the reserved judgment of God is!

Very soon after the fall of our first ancestors, they diverged into two groups. On one side were those like Abel who sought to worship and obey God, and on the other side were those who wanted to ignore God and live a selfish life, like Cain and his descendants. Cain killed Abel, but Adam and Eve had another son, Seth, who was faithful to God. Seth's branch of the family became known as the sons of God because they took after God, and Cain's tribe were called the sons of man as they were an ungodly and violent bunch.
For a time the two groups did not mix and the sons of God retained their relative purity of faith, but after some time the sons of God got attracted by the daughters of men and intermarried with them and came under the influence of the ungodly tribe. The saying that they "took as their wives any they chose" may also suggest polygamy as this was one of the practices of Cain's tribe (Genesis 4:23).
PS: about the "giants", everything was bigger in those days. Fossils show that there were dragon flies with 3 foot wingspans, 60 foot long snakes, and fish as big as busses. It is likely that humans were also bigger. They certainly lived longer.

Sons of God are angelic beings that left their habitation.
Jud 1:6 And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day.
We, you and I are made in their image.
Gen 1:26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness:
Spiritual bodies but not flesh.
Gen 6:4 There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.

Lose your wings, income a penis? honestly, i do no longer understand devoid of precise getting to are conscious of it. it is one among those issues that often at a loss for words me too, yet I with the help of no means took the time to inspect it. I constantly thought that the Nephilim have been from Lilith's lineage. additionally, i do no longer understand how mixing bloodlines might tarnish "real" faith, because it is not a genetic trait. the only logical factor i will think of of is that angels are not sexless, (perchance Matthew refers to angels being polyamorous?) and that there have been woman angels, as there are woman demons. If demons are so sexually charged and energetic(Incubi/Succubi for one occasion), it might make sense that angels are able to sexual intercourse, as demons are, in essence, angels. as a result, perchance most of the angels/demons needed women human beings rather of their woman opposite numbers.

The Urantia Papers reveal a much different story that explains the reference. The "sons of God" were actually Adam and Eve, and other celestial beings who were present on the earth in those days, essentially teaching the attributes of human culture.
Adam and Eve were supermaterial beings— they were not human beings born on this world— whose mission, among other things, was to biologically uplift the evolving races of mankind by mating their own offspring with the highest racial strains of the many surrounding tribes. These events occuurred slightly more than 37,800 years ago.
As we know, the plan went awry; Eve violated their "prime directive" influenced by trickery. Once Adam came to understand their default, his chosen course of action was to mate with as many human women as possible in order to pass on what genetic material he could. Eve eventually did the same, but our backward and primitive planet attests to the over-all failure of this part of the divine plan.
This is a barely acceptable summation of the whole story available in the Urantia Papers. Check it out here: http://urantiabook.org/newbook/papers/p074.htm

Some alien theorists think this means aliens came down and impregnated lesser-evolved primates and improved the gene pool with their alien DNA.
Others think it means Angels did the same.
Some think the book of Genesis is less historical and more of a collection of stories with symbolic meaning (as like other legends and myths) and that more can be learned from it by examining the context of the symbols used, when compared with the prevailing beliefs at the time the books were written. (Like for example the burning bush: at the time it was believed that spirit often manifested itself in fire.)

The sons refer to the legions that were booted from heaven with Lucifer now known as satan. The daughters of men is a reference to those who already dwelt upon the earth. I am not trying to insult you or any thing that is just what I've been taught about this subject. Hope this helps the dialogue.

The Sons of God are all the Angels, Jesus and Satan - at least these are the ones that are specifically listed. They have physical bodies and can directly interact with humans if they so desire.
