Most times I think the feather-ruffling comes from the askers, not the answerers. With some questions, you can look at how they're worded and realize the person has already made up their mind on an issue. So I try to avoid people who ask things like "Hey, don't you all agree that Jews control the media and should be exterminated?" Obviously, somebody like that is not looking for a well-constructed answer, just more people to speak up in agreement so that they'll feel more supported about their ignorant position. It's tempting to write a rebuttal and post it, but the asker will invariably give you a low rating and certainly won't choose yours as the "best answer".
And as for the answerers in general, let's face it, a lot of us answerers are on Yahoo! Answers because each one of us thinks deep down we're "right" about something that most other people remain ignorant about. This goes well beyond the religious section; you can see it everywhere on the site. And admitteldy this is a fun site, because answering all these questions gives us the self-satisfaction of showing off our knowledge about something. Yeah it's an act of mental masturbation, but for what it's worth, at least I admit it!

I agree, great place to learn and do a little positive ruffling. The laughs are enjoyable, but rare.

No. I come here to answer questions and here others thoughts---the honest ones, anyway, because their opinions matter. Those who purposely anger others for "some laughs" are living in despair and fear and betray their ignorance in all matters of importance.
"and maybe learn a little"... yeah that sounds about right.

Yeah, actually. The ruffling of the feathers is what more or less happens here.

Maybe at the start, yes, but now it's a habit turning into an addiction. I need balance,... but yes it's fun, at times... sometimes not.
