Find a local sportfishing outlet. For deep So Cal, that'd include:

Dana Wharf Sportfishing - Dana Point
Helgren's Sportfishing - Oceanside
Fisherman's Landing - Mission Bay
H & M Landing - San Diego Bay
Point Loma Sportfishing - San Diego Bay

as well as others. This time of year, you're better off going with a local 1/2 day or 3/4 day trip. Most landings, you can expect to pay $25-45 per person depending on the length of the trip. Tackle rental typically runs $5-15. If you don't have a saltwater license, you'll also need to get a one-day license, ~$11.

Check with the landings to see what their fish counts are. Number of fish caught, number of people fishing, if certain boats are having better success than others (PM 1/2 day vs AM 1/2 day, etc). Call them up, reserve some spots on the boat. Go out and have fun!

Depending how far south you want to go, Redondo Beach Sportfishing has full and 1/2 day trips you can get on 310 372-2111. They can set you up with everything you need. You can also reserve boats out of Marina Del Ray 310 822-3625.

It's a good idea to check the fish reports before you plan on going to see who's catching the most fish.

They have a limit to the number of people they can take, so call to make reservations.
