My 6 month old kitten has just vomited up phlem and a 2 or 3 inch live white worm which looks like an earth worm. I always thought that worms were something that were found in cats faeces or in the litter tray. Is it possible that cats can vomit up worms?
I intend to take her to the vet tomorrow but would appreciate some advice now as I am very worried and the poor kitten looks so scared and sad!
Thanks

Hi Ali...kittens are born with some intestinal parasites such as roundworms and others are from ingesting fleas and flea larvae, which causes tapeworms. They will also expel the worms as well as eliminate them through the faeces. What you may have saw was roundworms:

Save the worms in a plastic baggie and a fecal sample to bring in with your kitten when you go in to have her be evaluated and dewormed.

WOW. You need to go to the vet asap. I dont know what that place was talking about. I've always had cats and recently got a new kitten and you have to watch them close. He may have a virus, but something is very wrong. Are you putting water in the dry food? Because if the foods not chewed it probably not soft enough for the kittens undeveloped teeth. And you really should feed the cat just fish, that doesnt have all the nutrient a cant needs. I do suggest (after a very needed trip to the vet) you feed him mostly wet food. Cats need mostly protien, plus wet food will keep its weight down. Give a non bi-product dry food as well, it will give him some more vitamins and help his teeth.

Yes, they can vomit up worms, and it is a sign that they have quite a big worm load in their gut. It's good that you are taking her to the vet. Even kittens need to be wormed regularly, as they can get worms passed on from their mums right from birth. Worms are particulary damaging to a small kitten, as kittens need all the nutrients they can get to grow.

Your kitten should be fine as long as you get her to the vet asap and continue to worm her regularly.

i dont no much about animal illness but it may just be normal worms that are found in the faeces they just came out the other end, im sure the vet will sort her out no problem, u could always ring the vet tonight just to see.

your cat has worms nothing major to worry about. your pet should be treated every 3 to 6 months for worms and this is a simple process. and that is all the vet will do for it. usually involves a couple of tablets or drops.

Definitely take worm and kitty to vet. They will most likely want to keep her since this seems to be a severe worm infestation. You might get a 3 day wormer dose and also ALBON which treats minor infections and soothes stomach conditions. As for now, a warm blanket to curl up in might make her feel better (like heating pad on people).

it's seems likely your cat has worms. The vet can give you medication to deal with it. It's quite common in cats so regular treatment every 3 months is advisable.

Your cat has round worms. Take her/him to the vet and get drugs ASAP. It weon't be a problem once you get the kitten on meds. If they start throwing up worms, it means that they have so may that it is upsetting his/her stomach.

She has worms! That is very dangerous because you can catch it too! Go to the vet and for like $10 they will give her a dewormer, really quick and not expensive, but if she doesn't go quickly she could die

good information already on this page, but remember to wash you hand thoroughly and keep your face away from you kitten, just in case it has any worm eggs in it's mouth, I don't mean to worry or upset you but it's better to be safe than sorry until you get it to the vet.The vet will tell you how often to worm your cat.
