Wasn't he a drunk, and a naked one at that?

Didn't his alcohol problem lead him to expose himself indecently to his son? And in his embarassment he cursed the son of the son who saw him in this state?

When you don't have a problem with your own nudity, you can go up on deck in a rainstorm completely naked. That way you don't get your only change of clothes wet. The problem is that his drinking led him to build the ark without a deck.

Well, one of the first lessons one should learn from Gods Word, is that the people that God chooses to use are just that - regular old people - telling us what? That just because you might not be a holier-than-thou goody tooshoes, God may still have big plans for you in His service. In fact, if you look through the Bible, you will find example after example of this. Do you know why God doesn't use perfect people? Because there aren't any. Okay, that said -
Noah was a great preacher and teacher of the Love of God, but more importantly, he preached against a specific "people". The Scripture explains that when God destroyed the age that was, when Satan rebelled and took one-third of our people with him - It was decreed that each soul would come through this flesh life - one time - born of woman. Several angelic beings did not want to be born of women - instead, they left their place in Heavon, came to earth, and seduced and married human women. You can read of them in the Book of Jude. Anyway, the children born of these un-natural unions were called "geba" or "nephilim"- being translated, simply means "giants" - they were of a large stature. When God told Noah to build the Ark, he choose him because Noah was preaching against these "geba", and also he kept his family's geneology pure - none of them mixed with these beings. This is why God brought on the flood of Noah - to kill off these hybrids. I personally believe the flood was not world-wide, but only brought upon the areas where these beings were living.
In any case, don't forget how vitally important it was that Noah kept these beings out of his family tree - womb-to-womb down the line would come the Christ child - God couldn't have Christ come through a polluted line, and handled it. This was the second attempt Satan made at polluting that bloodline - the first was when he seduced Eve, and Cain and Able were born.
And the war is on - it will not end until Christ returns.

Genesis 6:13 the bible says the earth was full of violence because of them. So I am bringing them to ruin together with the earth.
So think about it, how bad he was and he was the only decent person on the planet? We almost were not here to complain about him. That tells you how bad the others were.

He didn't curse his son..... He cursed his innocent grandson.

The Bible punishes innocent children a lot.

So if mainworry's theory is correct why then would Shem and Japeth cover Noah up?

The scripture about a drunken Noah troubles many. Study of God’s Word always sheds light.
Important to note twice for emphasis it is written, HAM THE FATHER OF CANAAN.

(Gen.9:18-25) And the sons of Noah, that went forth of the ark, were Shem, and Ham, and Japheth: and Ham is the father of Canaan. (19) These are the three sons of Noah: and of them was the whole earth overspread. (20) And Noah began to be an husbandman, and he planted a vineyard: (21) And he drank of the wine, and was drunken; and he was uncovered within his tent. (22) And Ham, the father of Canaan, saw the nakedness of his father, and told his two brethren without. (23) And Shem and Japheth took a garment, and laid it upon both their shoulders, and went backward, and covered the nakedness of their father; and their faces were backward, and they saw not their father's nakedness. (24) And Noah awoke from his wine, and knew what his younger son had done unto him. (25) And he said, Cursed be Canaan; a servant of servants shall he be unto his brethren.

So what is the nakedness of his father, the nakedness of their father, or their father's nakedness?

(Lev.20:11) And the man that lieth with his father's wife hath uncovered his father's nakedness: both of them shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them.

(Lev.18:8) The nakedness of thy father's wife shalt thou not uncover: it is thy father's nakedness.

Canaan was the child of Ham and his mother or Noah’s wife.

He believed in God and worshiped him. He was the only person left on the Earth that trusted God. God chose to have mercy on him instead of destroying the whole earth in a flood.

He was not perfect by any means but he, like king David, loved and obeyed God.

He was just like Christians. We are not perfect just forgiven. He was so great mainly because of the Ark and he was the only one on earth that loved God.

He was one of the very few of whom it is said "He walked with God". God knew of his weaknesses and these were not enough to disqualify him.
