I can never seem to buy a perfectly green avacado on the inside. Does the slight blackish color mean that it is ruined or is it bruised and can still be eaten?

What suggestions do you have when buying an avocado that will ensure I get a good avocado?

Hello there,

Yeah,,, if it has black bits, it is surely bruised. As has been said, you can still use the flesh but really only in a mix e.g; Guacamole....

Avocados are really rather delicate and those people out there that insist on squeezing them to test their ripeness, only compound the problem.

Every bump or "squeeze" even on a hard, unripe avocado, will show itself at a later date.
that is part of the reason why you keep getting the baddies....

I worked in a fruit and veg shop for some time and picked up a couple of hints to tell the best way to obtain quality goods.

My best tip is to try and find a reputable dealer in the fruit and veg dept,,, next, do your Avocado shopping on a Wednesday, Wednesday, in my most humble opinion is the best day to do most things,,,,everyone over the last weekend and not quite looking too forward to the next and they are still mostly in a good mood as well...

Monday is a stink day to look for fresh goods,,, everything has been in the fridge over the weekend and the shops will try their best to sell all the slightly wilted stuff, often at reduced prices ( if you don't need it tonight,,,do wait.) before they go to the market again to stock up again.
Now I would like to offer a small tip on how to tell if an Avocado is ready to use or not....

Instead of squeezing the poor things to death ( ensuring that the next person will get a bruised Avocado)
Take your chosen Avocado (ever so gently) in the palm of your hand, then, with your thumb, press very' gently on the "stem" if that gives easily, then your "Alligator pear" is ready to use.

It is a good tip, as already mentioned, to buy them unripe and ripen them in a paper bag (with an apple inside it as well?)
Still, you can overlook the moment,, keep checking it/them.

Also, there are different varieties of Avocado,,,they all have their own peculiarities,,my favorite is the Haas variety, they are very common and (I think) the easiest to judge,,, the darker they are the riper they are.

Enjoy!!

P.S. I do think Avocados are a food of the Gods,, so please don't mind me too much for being so passionate about them.

Black Avocados

The darker the riper (on the outside). The inside can be bruised or it may be rotting if black. I just play it safe and not eat the black parts. Sometimes I have to throw out half of the avocado, the black stuff is not as tasty either. So that should tell something.

It's bruised, and can be eaten if the black portion is cut away.

When I buy avocados, I look for ones that give just slightly under the pressure of my finger. Those are generally ripe enough to eat, but not over-ripe!

Good luck!

Not at all! The oxidation process causes the avocado to turn dark. The seeds inside the avocado can cause the fruit to turn bad. If you are serving an avocado and want to lessen this process, put it in lemon juice. The acidity will help preserve the flavor and color.

it means it is slightly rotten, meaning oxygen got to it. It is alright to eat, if you ever put an open avocado in a refrigerator you will see it still turns dark as well. It is alright to eat may lose some of the flavor in the next day or so.. I wouldnt go past 2 days though after it is cut open.

Always buy avocadoes that are still firm to the touch. Leave in a brown paper bag on your countertop for a day or two until the avocado has a "bounce" or a "give".
Black in color means there can be spores on the avocado and get you sick.

generally the black color is only a cosmetic problem. if it is crusty and dry around the pit, throw it out. in general fresh avocados are best and will not be black inside. also look to see if the little button on the stem end is stuck in firmly, if loose or missing do not buy them.

If it's black toss it. If it's just slightly discolored, you can eat it , but it probably won't taste that good. Avies need to be firm when you purchase them. Very seldom can you buy an avie and it's ready to eat. They don't keep however. Buy one and watch it...I know that sounds rediculous but if you leave it for a few days unchecked it'll go bad. My sister buys them 4 to a pack and she's lucky if she gets 1 good one cause she waits to long.
