My 18-month-old daughter may have strabismus. I have heard that there is a test from or called Enfant. Is anyone familiar with this? It involves electrodes and watching visual images on a tv screen.

The typical tests for strabismus are:
a comprehensive eye exam
prism testing
Hirschberg test
Krimsky test

Enfant, that is the test's name, is a new test but is wonderful for children and has an extremely high success rate on diagnosis.

Explanation of the tests:
Prism test - while patient is staring at an object, prisms of different strengths are placed over the turned eye until it aligns with the normal eye. The stronger the prism is that turns the eye, the more severe the eye.

Hirschberg test - a light is shined in the eyes and normally, the reflection of the light should be on the same location on both pupils...if not, strabismus is present.

Krimsky test - another prism test but with the prism being held with the base in.

Enfant is used for infants and toddlers who are not talking at all or too young too talk well and can be performed on infants as young as 6 months. It is very child friendly. It records the brain’s response to light. Three sensory pads (the electrodes) will be placed on your daughter's head and then she will see a video of cartoons and music. Enfant will then record her brains responses to the attention getting stimuli. She will feel no discomfort at all!

The good news for you is that the results are immediately available at the completion of the test so, hopefully, they will tell you right away.

simple test would be to shine a flashlight towards her eyes, if it looks like the light is reflecting asymmetrically she has strabismus and should see a pediatrician.
