I know it is a med. size short hair dog that is originaly from Africa. They can bark, but they never do.

The Basenji is a small, short haired hunting dog from Africa. It is short backed and lightly built, appearing high on the leg compared to its length. The wrinkled head is proudly carried on a well arched neck and the tail is set high and curled. Elegant and graceful, the whole demeanor is one of poise and inquiring alertness. The balanced structure and the smooth musculature enables it to move with ease and agility. The Basenji hunts by both sight and scent. Characteristics--The Basenji should not bark but is not mute. The wrinkled forehead, tightly curled tail and swift, effortless gait (resembling a racehorse trotting full out) are typical of the breed.

The dogs that don't bark are Basenji's, they are from Egypt but were brought to Africa and are small hunting dogs. They coem in many colors and have short hair. Basenji's are great faimly dogs and are good with children. Basenji's also cope well with hot weather..they are from Egypt.

Basenjis do vocalize (they call it 'yodeling') on rare occasion. They used to only be tricolored or red & white, but in the 90's a few breeders got some brindle ones from the tribe that developed them in Africa, so now that pattern is spreading around the dog breeding world.
And they only come in heat once a year - in January. So this is their month, I guess you can say!

IT is a Basenji but another dog that doesnt bark or rarely barks is an Alaskan Malamute

They are called Basenji. Yah they dont bark they howl !!! and good luck trying to find a dog that doesnt bark

We had a female teacup short hair chihuahua who never barked , she growled when strangers were in the house but never barked . Being a chihuahua I expected her to bark like crazy all the time .

Basenji... I think they are medium sized, black dogs. I believe they do have some type of bark just really quiet.

I think you mean the Basenji. The sources below give more information about this barkless dog.
The third reference mentions them being able to emulate a bark.
