It depends how stable your relationship is. Have you been dating for awhile? Have you both said I love you?
However, I think the "little things" are important...like telling him you miss him every once in a while, telling him you love him, calling to say good night. Sometimes it is also cute to send an "I'm thinking of you" e-card from one of the online card sites. It's not over-the-top, but it definitely lets someone know that they are in your thoughts.
