God, that dog used to be one of my favorites until American breeders took all the working ability out of it. The German crowd followed soon there after. The SV club of West Germany severed its ties with the German Police several years ago because they could not produce dogs hard enough to do police work. Imagine the country that invented the shepherd. Anyway, now days the best shepherds come out of the Slovakian Border Patrol lines. That kennel has CONSISTENTLY produced WORKING German shepherds over the last 20 years. Black shepherds are not as common as the rest but they are available. You should know that the original color of the shepherd is a dark, almost black SABLE and the further you get away from that color the further you get from the original dogs. Good shepherds cost from $1500-$2000 for a puppy and adults much higher, depending on their training. I have payed as much as $10.000 for one and if you get into show lines from Europe you can get raped on how much you will pay. RIDICULOUS money. Look for a dog that comes from PROVEN working lines and save your money.

many good things. but i suggest you read and research the breed and it's characteristics and make your own decision. they are highly intelligent and thrive on being mentally challenged. they need exercise the same as any dog being walked at least twice a day. with a shepherd you are going to have to make sure you have the time for this dog. they are extremely loyal and take great offense to being pushed aside and their mind not challenged. if you take the time and are consitant and loving you will have a great dog no matter it's breed. be careful when buying a full shepherd. due to what the show dog standards are they want the dogs to have a roach or sloped back. this not only looks bad, (in my opinion) but is not good on the dogs themselves. if you are not wanting to show your shepherd and just want for a pet or other training then do not get one from a show breeder. those dogs are long, lanky and have sloped backs, and again in my opinion have bred out everything of the shepherd i have grown to love. as for solid black dogs. find a reputable breeder, one that checks for health issues assiaited with the breed, (you'll discover which ones when you research the breed) that the parents come from a line that has been ofa good, exelent rated, and the parents and the pups themselves have been temperment tested. also never buy from a petstore, or any breeder that will not let you see where they pups were born and raised and at least one parent.

Well my German Shepard is a great dog. However having said that she is VERY AGGRESSIVE. She has bitten some one who cam in our yard and is very protective of the yard. She is a wonderful guard dog and very intelligent. But she is also a great loving dog. When she knows the person she turns into a big whinny 3 &1/2 year old puppy. She flops on the floor and acts like she is dying if they dont pet her or she jumps up and tries to "kiss" them by licking their face. She is a goofball and is very protective of her family. If you train them properly you can have a great family dog and a great guard dog all in the same package. But you need to make sure every one who will live with the dog is the alpha dog in her pack. If not you could have some issues of dominance. Mine knows that she is the Beta in the pack second only to me and my husband, but above the other animals because she was first. But if she is ever aggressive with any other animal in the house she gets scolded and knows what we say is what goes. That is what it is like with my G Shepard. Try to get a puppy so you can raise it the way you want it to be. Good luck

OK German shepherds pure breed ones are black and brown . the bad thing can be that you have to train them well cause they can have a bad temper if not kept under control. the good thing is they can be great Giraud dogs they keep your home safe .plus there great couch buddies to hang out with. they may cost pure breed from 300-1000 dollars . if you want a mutt German mixes cost 25 or a little more. they are rteally smart dogs used by cops and army.

The bad thing about German Shepards bred in the U.S. is that almost all of them develop hip displasia. You can thank the dog show industry, along with short-sighted breeders, for that. Together, they bred and inbred the line into poor health, striving for an appearance standard that didn't jibe with overall health and joint function. There are other diseases and health concerns common to large breeds, and to shepherds in particular. But hip displasia is the biggest concern.

The best option for a pure-bred Shepard- albeit quite expensive - is to find a good line of proven European lineage, from a breeder putting out working-dog lines. Regardless of color - you're looking at anywhere from $1000 up for a good, European-bred pup with a good pedigree. Is it worth it? IMO - If you must have a sheperd, yes.

Best of luck.

like any breed there ar goodies and baddies. On the upside, wow they are the most loyall dog you could ever own. they are purely on person dogs though and tend to attatch to you. My shep is wonderful and so loyal and i would 100% trust her with me but on the downside they are quite highly strung dogs and tend to be a nervous breed in comparison with say a lab. If you get a good pedigree and do some serious training you will get a fab companion for life. There are alot of people with bad views on the breed and all i would say to them is get a shepherd and see how wonderful they really are.

shepherds require a great deal of attention because like other herding breeds, they require a lot of physical and mental stimulation. My biggest problem with shepherds is with the american shepherds which have bred their dogs with extreme angulation to the point of deforming their dogs. it's rediculous that they've gone to the lengths they have to make the dog have a pretty flying trot in the show ring. if you get a shepherd, get a German bred one that has proper angulation of the hind end.

My girlfriend paid $500 for her all black shepherd. We drove 10 hours to get him and his papers.

He is a very intelligent dog but has had issues with leash aggression. He's also very big and full of energy. Not necesarrily trustworthy around other dogs in public. Needs more training, that's all.

sheps are great dogs, however, adopt one. A breed as widely recognized and loved such as this has numerous rescues, and a lot of shelter and other rescue dogs are part german shepherd. You can ask the pros and cons of any dog, but a dog will be a good dog if it has a good master. Don't buy, adopt. Be a responsible person and not a greedy, murdering, irresponsible one.
