Is it me or is the picture on my 6 year old CRT better than any LCD TV i look at in the shops? I read review after review and currently think the best is the Sony 32" but i still can't convince myself its going to be better than my CRT i want to replace!
(I have freeview on an aerial that was proffesionally installed).

Don't go by the shops, they often have poor quality demo footage or going to the other end of the scale have hi-def footage looping where there is only actually a few channels with hi-def that cost more at the moment.

The reason CRT's look better is because LCDs are often bigger and are alot sharper which makes normal SD footage, made for a CRT tele appear maybe pixelated and not sharp. But wait a few years when HD is standard and LCDs will really shine, but now they're not really worth it unless you're buying a PS3 or watching HD films or going for the 'coolness' factor.

I'm not totally convinced either. When an LCD is receiving an HD signal I think they look fantastic, but when they are receiving a normal TV picture I think CRT is still the best. After all, the LCD has to take the analogue signal and all it's noise, digitise it and then display it and not many LCD/Plasmas seem good at this. Then they are being built for a digital HD signal so you can't blame them!

At the moment I think until HD is more universal and widely available you are better off with a CRT. Okay it may not last as long as an LCD or Plasma (So they say), but when it does break hopefully HD will be common place and you can get a new LCD TV for half the price they are now and with a more superior picture than those buying them now!

Oh, and you get better sound on a CRT, thicker TV maybe, but deeper speaker cabinets mean you actually get something ressembling base. CRT's are also by far the more interesting in how they work, same goes for VCR's.

The CRT will always produce a better picture than a pixel generated image such as the LCD. Standard definition broadcasts especially look worse on the digital televisions. The Digital TVs shine when fed a Hi-Def content.

With the screen sizes growing, the glass tube is neither cost effective nor practical to produce.

In the screen size you are planning for - if a CRT model is available - that will surely give you a much better picture. I think Sony's CRT Hi-Def line stops at 32". Also the CRT TVs are way more heavier and bulkier than their digital counterparts!!!

Nothing will touch CRT technology. It's tried and true.

If you want the best picture quality with the best contrast ratios and true 180-degree viewing angles, stick with CRT.

If you want "coolness" and a lighter, thinner TV with better power consumption, go with LCD.

I recently ditched my 34 inch widescreen CRT with a Vizio 42 inch LCD. For the first few days I noticed the quality difference. But now, I really enjoy the LCD, despite the fact it's only 720p and my previous CRT was 1080i.

CRT definateley better than LCD or Plasma. But if you are looking at a large screen look at Projection. I recently looked to purchase a large screen and went for a Sony 44" rear screen projection. The picture is definateley a lot better than LCD or Plasma.

You can have a problem with viewing angles on these, check this out with where you intend to position the TV prior to purchase. I have had no problem with this

CRT does have a great picture, but now that HD TV is coming in, they're going to be left behind. Go take a look at an LCD will full HD resolution and you'll be blown away by how good it looks.

you will have slightly better picture quality as long as you don;t go for some cheap and nasty model.

with freeview many of the benefits are lost, you really need to get sky hd, but at the moment there are not many channels that work in hd so the extra tenner a month and the £300 sky hd box are a lot to pay out for.

also, both the xbox 360 and playstation 3 both support hd and there you really will notice a much better image over your normal crt.

CRT has the best picture, no doubt.
people don't like the size of CRT though, its bulky
LCD has good resolution and no burn in issues but,
but has bad response time, bad contrast ratio's, and still aren't as bright as CRT

A new technology might be coming out soon that offers the picture quality of CRT in the size of a LCD. It is called Field emission display (FED) or more popularly (SED).
check it out using google

It's generally recognised that CRT provides a better picture, but they are just SO bulky. I have CRT, but would be happy to accept slightly poorer picture quality for the space saving qualities of LCD.

CRTs work better with the eyes because the phosphers which make up the colours on the tube work smoothly with the eyes natural response.LCDs turn on and off very quickly and to some people this can be an irritation.I prefer CRTs myself for moving images.
