I heard that eating chocolate can kill only some kinds of dogs. Then do golden retrievers fall under that category?

Enough chocolate can kill any dog, as it is toxic to them.

Our dog, for instance, weighs about 20 lbs., and 1 lb. of chocolate can kill her. Naturally, a tiny bit here and there will not kill a dog, but a large amount will.

The type of chocolate also matters. Baker's chocolate, or dark chocolate, are more dangerous than milk chocolate.

If your dog has developed a taste for chocolate, I suggest you buy some carob treats for him. They taste sort of like chocolate, and our dog loves them. They are a very special reward for her, but one that won't make her sick.

If your dog is a golden retriever, because of its size, it will take a lot of chocolate to kill it, more than most people have sitting around the house. Still, exercise caution. You don't want your dog to grow accustomed to eating something which is harmful for him.

Yes, chocolate *can* kill a dog, but it depends on the size of the dog and the type and amount of chocolate the dog ate. The chemical in chocolate that is poisonous is theobromine, which is a stimulant that can cause heart failure in large enough doses. Each different type of chocolate has a different amount of theobromine in it, with white chocolate having the least and unsweetened baking chocolate having the most.

It takes about 250 pounds of white chocolate to poison a 20 lb dog, about 1 pound of milk chocolate to poison a 20 lb dog, and a mere 2 ounces of baking chocolate to do the same damage. Smaller amounts can cause digestive upset and loose stools.

Your best bet is to avoid it completely.

Chocolate (which contains the poisonous ingredients caffeine and theobromine) acts as a vaso-constrictor to dogs which in turn could lead to heart-attack or stroke. Of course, this depends on the size of the dog and the amount ingested. Dark chocolate is more harmful than milk chocolate because of the concentration of cocoa. My corgi got into a bag of Hershey's kisses and diarrhea for two days. Luckily, that was all that happened. F.Y.I.: did you know that grapes and potatoes are also toxic to dogs?

Yes chocolate is toxic to dogs...all animals in general. The reason some pets eat chocolate candy and are fine is because the concentration of cocoa in the candy isnt high enough. Most chocolate candy is mostly milk and sugar. Its the really scrumptious kinds that are more than 70 % cocoa that you have to really watch out for ( like bakers chocolate )

Chocolate is toxic to all dogs. The only thing that matters is the size of the dog. If they consume enough chocolate, they go into shock and can die. It doesn't always happen right away, it can be several hours later before they begin to get sick. If you suspect that your dog has eaten chocolate, call your vet for further help.

I have never known a dog to actually die from it, but I have heard from many vets and animal breeders that there is an enzyme in it that is deadly to dogs.
I had a dog once that got into all of our chocolate candy for Christmas and ate a bunch of it. She didn't die but she didn't act like she felt too well for about a week after.
I just don't take the chance.

Chocolate can kill ALL DOGS. Chocolate contains caffeine, theobromine, or theophylline, which can be toxic and affect the heart and nervous systems. The amount of chocoalte usually is the key but any amount can have very bad effects on a dog. So dont give them any or let them have acess to it. Just be safe.

Yes! I have a Golden Retriever, and, when she ate one of my daughter's Halloween chocolate bars, I called the vet and he told me to give my dog Hydrogen Peroxide (hold her mouth open and pour 1/4 cup at a time until you've given the dog about 3/4 a cup) to force vomitting.

Do this outside, so you don't have a mess in the house.

Then, give the dog plenty of cool water to drink afterward.

Good luck!!

Pretty much every ANIMAL can die from eating chocolate. I don't quite remember but, it has something to do with the diogestional track, I thnk the liver of the intestines are effected. You can give a dog chocolate, but there is a limit. You CAN feed them white chocolate, and not worry, becouse it is not real chocolate. You can call around and check for yourself, but I got this info. from my mom, when she worked at the vets' clinic.

The truth is, chocolate contains theobromine which is toxic to dogs in sufficient quantities. The good news is that it takes, on average, a fairly large amount of theobromine to cause a toxic reaction. Although there are variables to consider like the individual sensitivity, animal size, and chocolate concentration.
yes it is possible to kill a dog with chocolate
hope i helped you in any way! =]
