I think maybe increased education is causing some of us to understand that the goal of a successful life is to live it by taking responsibility for our actions and not insisting that every question has an answer. No excuses, and rely on experience, not myths.

Because they never believed it in the first place. You have to understand that most of these people were raised with Christianity like it was part of their ethnicity and gender. I'm sure everyone raised in a religious household remembers the first time they questioned to themselves, "wait a minute, it's possible that this whole entire worldview is a lie that I ignorantly believed my whole life?" Next is the ensuing anger at the religion in question followed by---hopefully---some research. Unfortunately, most people are lazy. If, during their research, they find something as insignificant as "Jesus wasn't born poor but rich" or anything that doesn't 100% add up to the modern and western view of Christ then they're whole faith is shattered and proves two things:

1. They never understood the true meaning and relevance of Jesus and

2. They were never Christians

The people who leave Christianity leave because they cannot account for irrelevant facts that are ambiguous when looked into history. Or they start believing in hubris-ridden scientists that make claims beyond their knowledge. These people do not understand Christianity because it is flawless historically and logically and they don't research themselves but instead rely on what others say according to whether or not it is in line with what they want to believe. Hmmm, interesting. Either way, it's based on faith which the people you speak of never had, nor wanted.

As i have said many times in the past. People are waking up and realizing just how irrational religion is. we all have experiences that we cant explain. we are creatures with emotion but to attribute these emotions with a supernatural being is just plain irrational. it's a nice thought to think that this world is not all we are going to get becouse sometimes it feels like the world is a cold place. but this IS all we get so making the world a better place to live in NOW is what should be the focus. not sitting around waiting to be taken away into the clouds by some supernatural being. I am an atheist and live a very happy, moral, loving life without being instructed by a book written long ago by men that had a limited view of the world.

Not enough strong Christian leaders who would make them follow.
People, in general, are sheep. They need to be constantly pushed, and told where to go. Pushed by strong charismatic characters, those they can look up to. Today's Islam offers those charismatic characters, those true believers that have flames in their eyes. A lot of people go for that, without even realizing that they have been sort of charmed into a new faith.
Today's Christianity lacks leaders like that. But not for long :) It is a process. Kind of like exhaling and inhaling. Christianity is exhaling at the moment, and Islam inhaling.

I feel that them two are at the boxing ring, just feeling each other out right now, but shortly fists will start flying.... But that is a whole different subject :)

Good question!!!
I dont know if in all the branchs of christianity is happening the same, but inside the catholic church it is a fact, above all in Latin America.Vatican is an ultra conservative institution, it doesnt evolve with the times. Is so much closed to new ideas and still have arcaic uses.
I'm not telling that the church has to break its own rules, but if it doesnt make itself more flexible, in some few years will have the half of the pple that have nowadays.
For example..........where is said that priest cant get married in the Bible??
Many Popes were married, even some of them let their sons in their place after their death. But celibate was established in the Concilio of Letran b4 1200 ad. Before that the priest could be married.
Nowadays..........the only church that ask that to their priest is the catholic one. Inside the christian church ...the maronite, orthodox and armenian are allowed to have married priest if they are married b4 they become a priest.
That is one between many things that church can change, without break the own rules. Unfortunatelly..........pple in XXI century have different necessities that 800 years ago, but the church seems not realize about that.
How can a priest that never have been husband or father.......to advice the couples about their problems?
They have been sons and brothers, but cant know how is life between couples and the problems that they have to face.
I think........and is a very personal opinion,......that many sects are growing bcoz pple needs diferent things nowadays and are trying to get that inside those "new" religions.
If christian rulers were intelligent, would work closer to the pple.
Is not from the walls and richness in Vatican that few guys, in spite of they are the highest authorities of the church, will keep pple with them if they dont try to change and be more flexible.

The bible says the end will not come until there is a falling away of Christians. There are a lot of people becoming Christians too. I guess people didn't count the cost of being a Christian when they got saved. The bible says it would have been better for them had they never known Him, than to know and turn away.

No one is leaving, the right wing, fundamentalist Christian movement is growing by the hundreds. The question we have to ask ourselves if we are a mainline moderate/liberal church is...why are they leaving us and why are the converts choosing them.

Don't get the idea that the people here are chasing away anyone from being a Christian, lol.

there's a number of reasons as to why some people switch religions some switch because they find that one religion isn't right for them and they found the right religion for them and some switch to being non religious just because they end up disgusted and disappointed in religion or they just don't believe in a higher being or feel that a higher being is unknowable

I would guess it's because Christianity is narrow-minded and bigoted, or at least gives narrow-minded, bigoted people scripture to quote when saying there's nothing wrong with being narrow-minded and bigoted. I understand that there's a movement in the Catholic church to change Lent, because apparently people don't like giving things up, and so the church would like to have people "just do something good" during Lent.
