I'm trying papaya for the first time today and it taste like crap. It's really bland; not sweet at all and has a soapy aftertaste. Is that normal? Is it rotten or something? What is papaya supposed to taste like?

A papaya doesn't tate the way you described at all. I think the one you have eaten today was rotten, papaya is supposed to taste really sweet. I don't know how fresh you can get them where you are, but here in Colombia you can get any kind of fruit as if they were just caught from the tree.

papaya is one of these things that grow on you.
At first, you are unprepared for the taste and it is so different to other textures.
for a long time papaya was the only fruit I wouldn't go near.
I love the stuff now, it's sweet, refreshing and tastes so exotic!!
Don't write it off so quickly...

Every papaya I've ever eaten tastes much like you described. I do not like it at all. The seeds, when dried, make a decent peppery addition when cooking though!

girl..my mother in law gave me some and it was so grouse. that was the last time i ever had it, and she hated me at the time so i think that's why she gave it to me!!
so people say its good but maybe you need to acquire a taste for it..
