not sure what they are called but designed to prevent the shock to your eyes of a quick bright light.

I don't like the light that most flourescents give off, so I put a dimmer on the bathroom switch. That's very nice in the morning.

It depends on the fixtures starter. Most new fixtures are instant start. Fluorescent light use 75% less energy than incandescent bulbs. My question to you is what type of light given off do you prefer? They give off different color hues. I prefer them.
