What happens to water that makes it undrinkable after a few years, and what will it do to you if you drink it? Certain foods mold and spoil, but what about water?

Since plastic and glass bottles both have expiration dates I think it is a gimmick intending to make sure you keep buying water from them instead of stockpiling it when it goes on sale.

Plastic is porous. The expiration date is most likely how long it takes the plastic to break down enough that air can contaminate the water inside. If the water were in glass instead of plastic, pure and sealed airtight, it would never go bad.

Also, plastic releases chemicals as it ages. That's another consideration for the expiration date. It has nothing to do with the water and everything to do with the container.

The plastic bottle goes bad not the water.
