They are paint & varnish removal blocks? If so, are they worth it? Do they work

They really work, but it isn't the miracle that they say it is in the commercials. More or less, it's a pumice stone. Any irregular surface will cut a groove into the Miracle Eraser, so then, no contact - thus, no more sanding until you wear the eraser down to that point.

You're better off with a sanding block/sponge. If you have a heat gun, they work well too.
