Yes, you can take cigarettes. You can't take lighters but in the US you can take up to 4 packs of matches. Don't leave the cigarettes in your pocket when you go through security; put them in your bag and let them go through the X-ray. The wrappers set off the metal detector.

I haven't had problems carrying cigarettes but matches and lighters are banned.
