There can be different causes, including injury to the fingernail, zinc deficiency, and even a serious medical illnesses such as leprosy, sickle cell anemia, malaria, etc. It can also be defective keratinization or trapped air bubbles. However, I think the most common (and easiest to remedy) is zinc deficiency. A zinc supplement should clear it up.

Leukonychia is white streaks or spots on the nails.

The most common cause is injury to the base of the nail (the matrix) where the nail is formed.

i read it in the magazine a few years ago that when you lift things using you finernails, or anything that makes the fingernails "stressed" can cause those white strips. so i tried to avoid it and now my fingernails has no white stips/streaks...

Not Enough calcium in the body. Also sometimes not enough of a vitamin you need. This is your body's way of telling you you need something in your diet your not getting.

Hope this helps answer your question.

Peace:
Amanda
