Pulmonary embolism is when a blood clot enters the arteries of your lungs. These blood clots usually come from a vein somewhere else in your body, most commonly the legs. When a person has blood clotting problems, has a sedentary lifestyle, or had been immobilized for a long time (such as from a long drive, long airplane ride, or being bed-ridden due to illness or surgery), he/she is predisposed to blood clots that form in the vein of his/her leg from lack of flow/slow blood flow through the veins of the legs. If this clot (or part of it) gets dislodged, it goes up to the heart, and the heart pumps it out to your lungs. This blood clot then gets caught in one of the arteries that supply blood to your lungs. When this happens, the person has problems breathing and the affected part of the lung could die from lack of circulation. It is treated with anticoagulants like warfarin/coumadin or heparin, or with surgical removal of the clot.

Wow! That is so scary! I have not dealt with the pulmonary embolism part of the question, but I have dealt with the premature baby part. I had a nephew born at 28 weeks, and it was tough going for a long time. He was in the hospital for over 3 months and had to come home on oxygen and monitors as well as have a g-tube put in. That said, he is now 2 and doing great. No long term complications whatsoever. Then a year ago, my youngest son was born at 30 weeks. He stayed in the ICU for 7 weeks and had his fair share of issues, yes, but it was nothing like what my nephew went through. If they can possibly hold things off until at least 30 weeks, your baby will have a much easier time. But rest assured, babies are born at 29 weeks each day and do survive. Modern medicine has advanced hugely in this area. Right now, the most important thing is your health. I hope you feel better soon and that everything works out for the best. Good luck.

An embolism is a blood clot or blockage in general, pulmonary is lung. There are two types of blood clots, thrombus and embolis. A thrombus is a free floating dangerous clot. An embolis is a clot lodged in a vein or artery. It can become a thrombus. Many pulmonary embolisms clear up on their own, but some can be fatal.
