My cats, too, love the little plastic rings that you pull off of gallon milk jugs. They also love ponytail holders.

As for *actual* cat toys, anything that dangles from a string! They also love laser pointers. They'll spend hours and hours chasing that thing!

Lots of great suggestions! Here's another: fishing pole toys.

There's a great fishing pole toy in the toys section at PetFoodDirect.com that comes with a feathered "birdie" as the standard attachment and the attachments are connected with a keychain-type connector. They have a variety of alternate attachments and replacements, so you can switch them around and replace them when kitty wears them out and not have to keep buying the whole toy again.

My cats LOVE to chase things and batt and things too. If you dont want to interact with them so much, I suggest, one of those scratch posts with the string hanging off a bar on the top, ot tying string to a door or something. If you play with them, a laser light is so much fun and it is soo funny to watch them chase it. Ha ha. Just be sure not to shine it in their eyes of coarse.
