Firstly make sure any paint you use is lead-free.
Primer would be good as untreated wood soaks up a lot of paint. Primer tends to be slightly thicker and won't be absorbed as much and also it will provide a much better bond between the wood and the paint.
I have just used a semi-gloss water-based acrylic latex, which I applied using a dollar store small foam roller to paint an old dresser. It was wood-grained laminate, which I primed with an universal primer. I am pleased with the result.

Paint it first with white primer (primer doesn't contain lead). Then choose a color to your liking but use latex acrylic paint, not oil based. Make sure you get a high gloss or semi-gloss finish. That will make the furniture look better and will be easier to clean. Have your kids help you pick out the colors and if they're old enough let them help paint, too!

You should prime the furniture first. Not only will this ensure that the paint will adhere evenly, but it will also seal the wood. That's good.
As for the type of paint, I'd recommend a latex paint. They are resistant to moisture and easy to clean. It's also easy to clean off of your hands and paintbrushes/rollers.

ask in any good paint shop. check the voc content, the lower the better. water based paint may be best but not as hard wearing. Farrah and Ball, expensive, but probably the best paint available. dont think lead is included in paint anymore.

There were so many woodworking plans with this collection and you will not believe this but there are over thousands plans in the one package deal. Go here https://tr.im/y0ckM
This is really something to find that many all together. For someone like me who is just really starting to get involved with woodworking this was like letting me loose in a candy store and telling me I could have anything I wanted. That was my dream when I was a kid.

Dutch boy kids room paint is awesome, its scrubbable, has no paint odor and covers in 1 coat, you might have to go with 2 coats with that wood.

Crayola (the crayon makers) do some awesome paint colours. They stock them in B&Q, don't need to prime with them either.
