stay over till monday...probably get a cheaper flight too!
you know for someone who doesn't live there it is very difficult to tell the busy times from the rest because there is so much going on always looks busy to me yet i have been there in the summer and in the residental areas (anywhere not midtown) were much quieter than other times. remember your going to have so much fun just donot plan too much in one day...it is impossible to see "everything" on one visit!!! Pick your top 10 and go from there

It's not so much the city busier on Friday than Monday but the going rate. Travel during a weekend (leave Friday, return Monday) is more expensive than mid-week travel (leave Monday, return Thursday or Friday).
Monday's are no different from Friday's. How you plan to see the great sights in NYC is what matters.

Like most cities, any part of New York City can be dangerous at night for a lone young woman unfamiliar with the area. Those particular areas are fine during the day time, although Central Park does get rougher as you go north of 86th St. Around the UN can be deserted at times. The theater district is near Times Sq and there are still many pickpockets around -- so watch your belongings. With all due respect to LJ, I do not see the appeal of LIC or Astoria. There are a lot of young people living there, but they are hardly "real" New Yorkers. They are generally not form the NYC area and looking for more hip and less mainstream places to live. It is pretty much traditional gentrification. Personally, I like walking around the upper west side, the Empire State Building when admission was not obscenely expensive, the Museum of American Finance, the Transit Museum (Brooklyn Heights), and when I was younger, tying one on in a dangerous neighborhood (not recommended). Since it looks like you are staying in or near LIC, you might have fun going into Manhattan, taking the cable car to Roosevelt Island and walking around (weather permitting).

Hotel prices are generally higher on the weekend, but tend to drop if it extends to a weekday. So I would recommend trying to schedule it so it falls on Monday, if possible.
The nightlife is definitely busier on Fridays and Saturdays, but during the daytime the city is busier during the weekdays.

The nightlife is busier on a Friday. It's always bustling though.

Me being a native NYer, the city is always busy. From what I can remember, because I am in the Air Force and not currently there, Sunday mornings to about early afternoon is not too busy. To experience NY you have to be in the thick of it. Don't be afraid to have a mob of people rushing at you. That's the way NY is; it's a fast city!

I lived in N.Y. all of my life! You should go on a Friday! Most definately, N.Y. is beautiful all the time and there are many different things to see and enjoy but there are definately more people out on the weekends! Although you'll enjoy it no matter when you choose to go!
