I just love the Canon 400D which I used a couple of times but its beyond my price range. I was thinking of picking up a compact which gives nice and clear images and can also give reasonable night shots. I was thinking maybe the Powershot S3 IS or the Pro1. I dont want to just stick to Canon but to be honest just dont know that much about cameras but would like to learn to take really good shots.
Does anybody know of similar cameras that would be more around the price range of the the Powershots but is good value for money??

If you want a compact Canon camera, then have a look at one of the ultra compact point & shoot, SD models (SD600, SD700 IS, SD 900Ti).

For a slightly bigger camera, then look at the new Canon A630 or A640 (which have full manual control if you want it).

The S3 IS has that great 12x optical image stabilized zoom. It would be the one to get if you want the 400mm+ reach.

I don't know how much the Canon D runs but since you were thinking of Canon PowerShot S3 IS, check out Canon S2 IS. It has 5 megapixels, 12X optical. Also my camera Sony CyberShot DSC-H2, 6 MP, 12X optical and also camera I bought my daughter a Fugifilm FinePix S5200. It has 5 Mp, 10X optical zoom and cheapest in the group. All 3 are fine cameras.

I don't really know that much about cameras either, but am very pleased with my Sony Cyber-shot. It's very compact and light, extremely simple to use and the pics come out fine - at least for me. Oh, and not expensive.

choose one with at least 5mp and 3x optical zoom and built in flash. for ameteur use i found the hp photo smart m417 quite user friendly and great quality pictures(which i used for desktops). cannon, sony, hp, nikon are all great camera brands
dont sacrafice pixallage for zoom since 1 megapixel can compensate for a lot of zoom
