Once many people are released from a psych. facility the world
at large is overwhelming. They are often jobless, hungry and homless. They can't even get their disability check, because they have no address. They often can't afford the meds. or due to the
illness they don't take them.Aftercare is non exsistent. These people live on the threads of society and are forgotten and ignored by most.So they spend their life in a facility because they have no where to go.

Some people with mental illness don't believe they truly have a problem so they stop meds that are helping and are resistant to sticking with their treatment. All the advancement in medicine dosen't change the basic problems that result from the illness itself.

Some people can not cope in the outside world. Some people refuse to take their meds and are committed because they are seen as a danger. Sometimes doctors put people in hospitals to see how they react to meds and keep them there until they have their meds correct. Also there are a lot of people who commit themselves.

Some just aren't suitable for the outside world. Some chose to be there. Some are forced to stay. I bet not all of them really need to be in there forever, but the ones that do, well then they haven't found a cure for them yet.
