Cats are usually happy when they purr, but they will also purr when they're frightened, uncomfortable, sick or in pain.

One animal behaviorist has written that cats seem to purr whenever they feel anything profoundly.

Cats purr with any surge of emotion. Cats purr when they are in pain or scared as well.

That is why you look at other things to tell if it is happy. Such as the tail movement and stance.

Nope. Cats will also purr when they're nervous or interested in something- you need to watch the body language that goes along with the purring.

Cats purr for many reasons - my cat purrs when she's with my husband and getting pets (she is litterally in love with him), she purrs when I get home from work and she's happy to see me cause she's hungry and she is begging, she purrs when I take her to the vet and she's scared.
Purring is a way for them to comfort themselves, and a way for them to show that they are receiving comfort.

Cats purr when they're happy. But it's also a way to comfort themselves in stressed situations.

No, vets say they do it when upset or in pain, too. One vet even said they purr as they are being euthanized. It might help them calm themselves down, kind of like letting off steam. Nobody really knows why cats purr!

They also purr (and stretch) when they are overstimulated. When I come home from travel and my bags smell like other animals, my cats purr and stretch all over the place. It's hilarious.

Normally they are happy or content.

but a cat may purr when it is in extreme pain. It is believed that the cat will do this to try to sooth itself.
