Our basset hound puppies are 5 weeks old today. They will be going to their new homes in about 3 weeks. My question is this. How much socialization should they be getting? I want them to be very well socialized before they go to their new homes. Here is a picture of where they are sleeping and playing.

It's a six sided gate, with a big sheet of linoleum under it. I have newspaper on one side and a blanket on the other side. It's working out really well, because they are learning to use the paper to potty. And of course, they have lots of stuffed animals and other toys to play with.

My children, husband and I go in the bedroom with them constantly throughout the day and usually pick one or two of them up for snuggle time. Also, I let them out of the gate for about an hour each day and I sit on the floor and play with them. Their mom still nurses them about 3 times a day. Do you think they are getting enough in terms of being socialized?
Thanks

Rule Of Seven

By the time a puppy is 7 weeks old, it should have:

1. been on 7 different surfaces: carpet, concrete, wood, vinyl, grass, dirt, gravel, woodchips, etc......

2. played with 7 different types of objects: big balls, small balls, soft fabric toys, fuzzy toys, squeaky toys, paper or cardboard items, metal items, wooden items, milk jugs, etc.......

3. been in 7 different locations: front yard, back yard, basement, kitchen, car, garage, laundry room, bathroom, crate, kennel, etc....

4. met and played with 7 new people: include children and older adults.

5. been exposed to 7 challenges: climb on a box, climb off a box, go through a tunnel, climb steps, go down steps, climb over obstacles, play hide and seek, go in and out a doorway with a step up or down, run around a fence....

6. Eaten from 7 different containers: metal, plastic, cardboard, paper, china, pie plate, frying pan, etc....

7. Eaten in 7 different locations: crate, yard, kitchen, basement, laundry room, bathroom, x-pen, etc...

You are doing good with the pups. They are adorable. They do need more exercise tho. They are in such a small area, there is not enough room to move around. You should take them outside for a couple of hours a day if possible. I would say they are getting enough socialization but exercise for a pup this size or any pup is essential.

Get more social with them over the next 3 weeks. They need more. Play with their mouths, ears and feet, to get them used to vet visits. Give them more time together in a large area to play. Pretty soon, you will want them running as free as they can be to start exploring and being well socialized.

Have fun

Looks and sounds like you are doing a great job. You can never give them to much attentions just like children. Pups have lots of energy so you might need to have them out more.

Good Luck!!!

Have you started them on moistened food yet??

you have beautifull puppies . Just try to bring alot of people that you know really well around them . Have them talk to them in all types of different voices as well including baby voices so that they are accustomed to that. good luck .
