I have had experience with both software and professional (human) tax preparers. The humans required many, many documents to justify the figures I gave them, as if they were working for the IRS (they may be justified). However, the humans made more errors. The software fairly well accepts your figures; it may question any figures that seem unreasonable or contradictory. My software is less expensive than tax preparers, but I am wholly responsible for the results and errors. Still, I recommend software. With the level of complexity you describe, you made need human advice and you will be required to pay several hundred $ for their services.

It depends on whether you feel comfortable with the numbers and/or terminology. I personally feel that with the tax software available today, very few people actually need a tax professional. The software can do just as good of a job. Of course, the software is only as good as the data that is entered into it.

If your income is less than about $40,000, you have another option - you can get your taxes done at no charge at a VITA site. You can get more info at irs.gov.
