Most states now require a bachelor's degree to go to work as a P.O. Most of my coworkers have degrees in Criminal Justice, but Psychology and Social Work degrees are also related.
To be a detective, you will most likely need a degree in Criminal Justice and some experience as a "street" cop.

The minimum educational requirement for parole officer jobs is a degree in one of the social sciences from a 4 year college or university. In addition, parole officer training includes undergoing a written and oral examination. Psychological testing is also mandatory. In some states you have a set time to complete an additional parole officer training course. Physical preparedness is determined by administration of a physical abilities test. Most states require a full year of supervised casework experience as well before you can consider your preliminary parole officer training complete. Continued parole officer training is highly advised to keep on top of advancements.

You need a degree in "Corrections". After you graduate, you'll have to go to a law enforcement academy for field training. Try to take as much sociology and psychology as you can. At many schools, a "corrections" degree is actually part of sociology, so your major may be in sociology with an emphasis in "corrections."
