It depends on the family.

Outdoorsy, active folks who want a dog to chase balls could use a sporting breed or a border collie.

People who live at the beach might want a Poodle, Portuguese Water Dog or some other dog that loves water.

Homebodies who like to just hang out might choose a toy breed or a small hound.

The best family pet is the pet that fits the family's lifestyle and can be a part of their daily activities.

Depends on the family. My gut says Golden Retreiver, but if you live in an apartment...no or are all couch potatoes, then no. You have to determine your lifestyle and why you want the dog before you can determine breed. I'd go to the ASPCA or check out a website that goes over basic breed characteristics. Jot down a few that appeal to you and ask breeders if you chose the right one. Or Type "Is a ____ right for you" in a yahoo search using the quotes and fillling in the blank with your breed. Then you will find pages created by breeders that explain the pros and cons of each breed.

there is no one particular breed of dog that makes the perfect family pet. it all depends on the individual dog in question and the particular family looking for a dog. i personally recommend you got o your local humane society and have a look around. Tell the people about your family and what you are looking for in a dog and they will find a match for you and your family. at the humane society the dogs have been temperament tested so the people that work there will be able to guide you to the perfect match. plus you get to save the lives of 2 dogs by adopting from the humane society. 1 life of the dog you make part of your family and another life by freeing up a space in the humane society for a dog that otherwise would have been put to sleep.

We could not choose between a Lab or a poddle

...so we got a labradoodle

Absolutley PERFECT with the 5 and 7 year olds, hasn't barked more then twice, hasn't nipped or chewed. Most likely will be a very minimal shedder. 7 commands taught in three weeks, 4 hand signals. She will actually shake off after after a bath when I tell her. 90% potty trained in a month. Now I tell her to "go to the bathroom" and she does, like a sit command. Then wags for some lovin.

Her parents were medium. So she should max at 50 lbs.

Interesting mix! Lovable, loyal, intelligent, active, lazy, laid back - to good to be true

I used to work for a vet for 5 years. He said the best dog to have is a small short-haired mixed breed dog. He said a different gene pool would almost guarrantee non of the inherited defects that the pure breeds have. So taking that advice, I've never been happier. When our dogs die, or have to be euthanized, I get my mix breeds from a shelter. Best of luck to you.

depends on the family. For couch potato families, get a cocker spaniel, pug, or some other lazy dog. For active outdoor families, Australian Shepherds are awesome but need a LOT of activity.

St Bernard's-Although they are big they are the gentlest, most loving dogs. Not high energy but love to walk. They really do not eat more than say a lab and drooling is over exaggerated in the movies!!

So much depends on the family....how active you are, how much room you have....

My favorite is Britannys.....They are not tiny lap dogs but they are not large either.....30lbs or so give or take.....they are very playful and are good with kids....they are sporting dogs so they do have lots of energy.....what I love about them is that they are great hunting dogs as well as family dogs

Depends on if you like small, medium, large, or extra large. For me its always been rotts, or mastiff. My rotts where very friendly, they never met anyone they didnt like. and my english mastiff loves everyone also and is a big o couch potato too lol. You should do tons of research to find a breed just for you. whats works for might not work for you.
