Okay first with the advice:
How old are the dogs! You do know that they should be at least 2 years of age before you should try and breed them right. This way the dogs are mentally and physically able to breed and take care of the puppies once they are here. That may be why the male is having a hard time he is not old enough yet. You maybe looking at unhealthy puppies or have to feed them yourself with puppy formula.
Second: You do know that you should be feeding a high quality Puppy food to the female after the breeding while she is pregnant and after the puppies are born until they are 8 weeks of age. That dose not mean going to the grocery store that means going to the pet store! Grocery store food is no good for your pet. If would be like giving your children Burger King everyday.
Avodrem
Nutros
Nature Receipt
Royal Canine
Pinnacle
(these are just a few your local pet store can point you in the right direction)
Third: the puppies should not go to new homes until they are at LEAST 8 weeks old. They learn socialization during this time. With smaller breeds I recommend they stay with the mother until they are 9 to 10 weeks old.
Forth: Never leave the couple together without supervision! They get stuck together and if the female or male trys to get away before the swelling goes down then you could be looking at really hurting your dogs!!
Last: Your friends could find poms from tons of great breeders around the area! AKC can even help you find a really good breeder. What if you have more puppies then friends to take them? I use to breed years ago and stop because the pounds where over flowing!! My great grandfather started it and only use Grand Champion show dogs as breeders! Dogs should never be bred unless that breeding will better the breed. All you are doing is creating more Low Quality dogs. Or Try your local rescue!! there are tons of rescue all around and they will travel to bring your dog to you then you are helping an animal that was the product of back yard breeding! Sorry but I just hate seeing back yard breeders. Walk through the pound and see what I am talking about. Over 60% of the dogs in the pound are there because of back yard breeders and almost 50% are pure breds

Dogs do not have periods
They have heat cycles.
The heat cycle lasts three weeks
They breed in the middle of the cycle.
NEVER leave a breeding pair alone together.
They can get hurt or one can hurt the other.
Your friends who want puppys should get one from a shelter or rescue. You will be suprised how fast those friends disapear when those pups are ready.
Without proper genetic testing who knows what the quality of health these pups will have. No one.
You are excatly what the term Back Yard Breeder was invented for.

I think that you should consider yourself a "Back Yard Breeder".
Do you know what faults each dog carries and what genetics's they will be handing down to the pups.
Have you held pedigree to pedigree to compare them.
You do not even know what the cycle consists of and needless to say that you have no idea as to what you are doing.
Think that you should get both dogs spayed and neutered cause they are probably only pet quality anyway and Lord knows, we don't need no more mutts.
Sorry, sweetie, but if you are not a breeder to better the breed you have no business breeding. I either spay or neuter at 4 months of age. I have seen truck loads of bodies being taken to the local land fill. Dogs that looked like pure breeds, mutts of all kinds.
Don't do it, please don't do it. BYB's have no knowledge as to the standards of the breed and in their ignorance the create crap.

Please don't contribute to the pet overpopulation problem! Nobody should be deliberately breeding dogs, especially those who are not knowledgeable about the process and/or the potential health problems of the breed. Do you know the genetic backgrounds of both these dogs? Shame on your vet for encouraging this!
For every puppy that you bring into the world, you are responsible for the deaths of an equal number of dogs in shelters. Do the responsible thing: have your pets spayed & neutered and encourage your friends to go to a shelter or rescue group.

Don't!
1) You don't have enough knowledge at this point (dogs don't have "periods")
2) It is unlikely that either of these dogs are breeding quality and probably haven't been screened for common health problems in the breed
3) You'd be surprised at how quickly all those friends who were dying for a pup dissapear once the pups are ready to go.
4) Never leave the dogs alone to mate, especially if they are inexperienced, one or both could be seriously injured. If you hve to go out, or can't be actively supervising them, separate them.

new at this and the only reason am breeding my pom is because my friends really want one, so they all have homes to go too after she has them!
Your friends can get a pom from a rescue group===shame on you that you want to create more dogs and you don't even know what you're doing. Get your dogs neutered and spayed---be responsible

Neither! this is a few distance too vast of a set to talk! A properly bred purebred would be healthiest. THe breeders learn pedigrees and do a lot of wellness screening. they are able to avert issues that arise in that breed. As for poorly bred canines- mutts and poorly bred purebred- it relies upon on that subject. some mutts could be extra perfect off than very inbred purebreds, yet some purebreds nonetheless could be extra perfect off because of the fact the mutts must be from those inbred canines and then they have the prospect of ailments for 2 breeds rather of one! there is no foundation to asserting that mutts are fit. they arrive from the best comparable inventory as all those purebreds with a "smaller gene pool", why could desire to they magically be fit merely when you consider which you randomly mixed the genes? good wellness comes from making plans, which demands a usual meaning purebred and robust breeders. shield canines are great, yet do no longer purely get one when you consider which you think of it rather is going to likely be fit because of the fact it jsut isn't genuine.
